The Colourful And Wonderful History Of Disneyland Paris

Monday, December 14th, 2009

When Walt Elias Disney first penned a cartoon of a scrawny mouse back in the early 20th century he could never have imagined the size of the Business empire that would be built on the back of Steamboat Willie – Disney Studios’ first significant animated short.

As well as the successful animation and film subsidiary the Disney Corporation now boasts a multi-national presence encompassing TV, retail, Sports franchises and of course theme parks. A worldwide phenomenon, the closest park to the UK is the one at Disneyland Paris, currently celebrating its 15th anniversary.

Armed with the strap line “Where dreams come true” the complex was opened in April 1992 to a glorious fanfare and undisguised derision in equal amounts, with a significant number of French individuals and organisations turning up their noses at the perceived uncultured attraction.

After finally recording its first quarterly profit in July 1995 the Disneyland Paris resort has gone from strength to strength and now attracts in the region of 13 million visitors each year, making it one of Europe’s biggest tourist destinations.

The resort, situated in the Marne-la-Vallee some 20 miles outside Paris, features not only the two theme parks but an entertainment area, golf courses and themed hotels spread over some 140 acres.

The resort was situated near Paris for various reasons but one of the main attractions was that an estimated 70 million Europeans were within a four-hour drive with a further 300million able to reach it with a flight of two hours or less, making for a massive potential market.

But, as already touched upon it’s not been an easy ride for Disneyland Paris. After the idea of developing a European park was originally mooted in the early 1970s there was an initial list of over 1,200 possible locations throughout the continent.

This was eventually whittled down to four locations in France and Spain and at that point Paris was the least favourite. However, a combination of stiff Mistral winds and hard bedrock and a general lack of confidence in the Spanish infrastructure ruled out the other three locations in Northern Spain and the south of France leaving Paris to pick up the big prize.

Since the resort opened its doors on April 12th 1992 it has been in a constant state of flux with numerous different attractions and hotel rooms being added over the years. Landmarks in the development have included the addition of Space Mountain in May 1995, the park’s first quarterly operating profit in July of the same year, and the opening of a second park – Walt Disney Studios – in March 2002.

The amount of hotels rooms on site has grown steadily from 5,200 at opening and the total is projected to rise further to a staggering 18,500 by 2017. All on-site hotels are themed to areas of the USA, with Hotel New York, Newport Bay Club, Sequoia Lodge, Hotel Cheyenne and Santa Fe all surrounding Lake Disney.

A further Disney hotel, the Davy Crockett Ranch, is located outside the resort perimeter in woods but guests of the park aren’t compelled to stay in Disney properties and instead can opt for one of the seven well-known, independent hotels on the fringes, all of which operate free shuttles to the parks’ entrances.

With even more hotels planned the future looks bright for Disneyland Paris. It now draws the visitor numbers that will ensure continuance well beyond its 15th Anniversary Year.

De-stress During the Holidays

Friday, December 4th, 2009

span style=”font-size: 12pt; font-Family: "Times New Roman";”>Preparing your home for the holidays, shopping for the gifts, and of course planning the meals and everything else that goes along with family and friends coming into town for the Holidays, can be very stressful. It gets especially hectic when combined with normal stresses such as work, kids , and normal housekeeping. The problem is, with all this going on you may not have time to think, let alone take a break. On the other hand, the only way to stay sane during the holidays is to learn ways to eliminate stress throughout the day or you will surely be up all night thinking of all you have to do the next day.

The best way to eliminate stress during the holidays is to organize your duties. Make a list of everything that needs to be done before the guests arrive. Start early if you have to make room in your home for guests. This way you will have plenty of time to rearrange guest rooms, make reservations for guests that will be staying at hotels, etc… You will also have plenty of time to wash linens, go shopping for gifts, and of course plan your meals in advance and purchase all the food you will need to prepare the dishes.

Above all else, plan time for relaxation. If you only have a few minutes per day to relax, make the most of it. Sit in a room by yourself and listen to the quiet sounds of a table top water fountain. Take a warm bath using aromatherapy candles, bath oils, or even spa bath sets. The only way to eliminate stress is to give yourself a few minutes to relax and think of nothing more than yourself.

You do not have to take hours, but take out time to eat Healthy meals, read a chapter of a book per day, or enjoy soaking in a hot tub with bubbles. Remember, the world will not end if you take a break. If you have hectic afternoons, take time for yourself as soon as everyone goes off to school and work, before you begin your day. Just a few minutes will help refresh and rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul, so you can accomplish all the many tasks that are involved with every holiday.

If you have little ones, it can be very hard to find a minute to yourself. Add in all the extra chores around the holidays, you may be ready to throw your own tantrum. However, it is imperative during stressful times like these, to remember the true reason behind the holidays. Try to distress as best as possible and take some time for yourself to relax a bit and just partake in part of this joyous season before it passes by and you miss the cheer altogether.

Baby Boomer Holidays — Ready or Not–here They Come

Friday, December 4th, 2009

As you approach the upcoming holiday season, what emotions come to your mind–excited, merry and invigorated? Or do the words—panicky, sorrowful and fearful—seem more fitting? Perhaps your children moved away or you decided to move to the place of your dreams (good for you). In 2008, you watched your retirement savings shrink before your eyes and have spent more time at home because you dreaded the sticker shock at the gas station. The Holidays just won’t be the same this year—and what’s worse, they may never be the same.

I suppose I’m a born dreamer or a slow learner because I continue to fantasize the perfect holiday. Oh, I know the holidays can’t ever meet the fairy tale endings and the “ooh and ah” factor the TV and movies depict, but there’s still a part of me that holds on to unrealistic expectations.

But this is the year I really have to do it. This is the year I have to focus on what’s important, simplify everything and and keep—not just plan—a gift budget. Here are five things to help you design your best holiday.

1. Identify your shoulds. You know what they are. They are all the unwritten rules you have created for yourself year after year for the holidays. Like the rule where you have to bake ten different kinds of cookies, prepare a seven course Thanksgiving dinner or buy a certain number of gifts for each loved one.

I’m not suggesting that you eliminate all of your shoulds, but think about what continues to be fun and gives you joy. If you still love to bake those cookies—go ahead. If not, bake only your favorites and maybe there is a family member who would enjoy using your favorite recipes (only if they are willing to share some with you). Better yet, how about spending a day with someone from your family or a friend as you do the cookie recipe hand-off.

2. What rituals and traditions do you have? Now that your kids (okay so they are really adults, but they will always be our kids) are older or they live in various parts of the country, do these rituals continue to make sense?

If you’ve decided to make a change—make sure you warn your family members ahead of time. Don’t make the mistake I did. When my daughters were younger, we started a ritual of giving them Christmas pajamas. This actually started as our solution to having them look decent when we took the photos every Christmas morning.

One year I decided the girls were just too old for their Christmas pajamas, so I didn’t buy them. Well, talk about disappointment. I added it back into our tradition the very next year–although no one gets flannel any longer.

3. Who are the folks that make your holidays special? Friends are the family you choose yourself. How can you get together in a way that doesn’t create a burden on any one person and everyone (especially you) can enjoy the time together—and not be stuck in the kitchen.

It may be impossible to spend time with all your children. Think what ways you can compromise and take turns–Thanksgiving at one house, Christmas at another or visit different families in different years. Surely not the holidays you remember from the past, but accept what you can’t change and celebrate the good things you have in your life.

4. Develop your budget for gift and entertaining. Who hasn’t been impacted by the economy this year? Sure the stores are doing their best to lure us to buy more stuff, but is now the time to buy that extra frivolous gift when the money would be better served for more essential items (or your gas tank)?

Many families have found ways to solve such issues. For example—establish a dollar amount and pull a name out of a hat to buy for one Family member or give gifts to only young kids are a couple of the ideas that seem to work for a lot of families. I confess, I have been known to over-spend at holidays—picking up many cutsy impulse items. Sometimes my girls loved what I bought, but many times–not so much. This year, I will stick to their list and eliminate or reduce those extras.

5. Get real about your physical abilities. As we get older, it gets harder and harder to get on the ladder to string the lights on the house; stand on our feet for hours while we bake or cook; and walk around the mall for all those gifts. Do what you can–safety and Health always comes first.

The one positive note that has resulted from the economy issues, is that we have had to get back to basics. Families, friends, love and sharing with others—that’s what the holidays are all about anyway.

Hiking Holidays Are Out – Mountain Bike Holidays Are In!

Friday, December 4th, 2009

For a change of pace, why not take your friends and Family out to mountain bike holidays? You can all enjoy the sun, the long stretches of road and the wide open spaces together as a group, and in the process get some much-needed fresh air and exercise!

Instead of hiking holidays, mountain bike holidays ought to help you cover more ground, and enjoy more of the scenery. This would allow you to get the best out of being in a new location, which should be all the more reason to want to book a biking holiday somewhere far from home! Cycling instead of hiking would bring about less discomfort on anyone’s part, too – fewer corns aching, legs cramping and dismayed cries of “are we there yet?”

A lot of cycling holidays take place only once a year, per location. This is why you have to book a biking trip preferably months ahead of time! But there are cycling holidays year-round, if you know where to look. If in case popular biking routes are closed due to the season or other less predictable factors, you can try to book a biking trip out of the state – even out of the country!

There are biking holidays in the UK, in European countries, even in Asia, Africa and Latin America. If you’re after truly exotic locations, look into a route that could take you on a scenic journey through the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Or take a trip through the Red River Valley, get to know the natives who live along the tour route, and sample a genuine taste of Vietnamese culture.

The United States also has some lovely biking locations, so don’t miss out on the chance to have fun close to home. There is a good route outside of San Francisco, California, for example, which would take you around Lake Tahoe, Mammoth Mountain and down to Santa Cruz. With luck, you’ll be able to make a booking for a coast-to-coast biking tour. If you and your loved ones are adventurous and able-bodied enough, this could be an extremely memorable trip.

Never underestimate the fun you can have when traveling with your loved ones, and don’t pass up the chance to turn your quality time together into mountain bike Holidays. In fact, why not make biking holidays an annual family affair? Select a favorite location to turn into a scenic spot for a regular family reunion, or sample different locations yearly with your free-spirited friends!

Tips On Using Loan Repayment Holidays

Friday, December 4th, 2009

If you find yourself struggling to pay off your loan in the short-term because of unforeseen financial difficulties, then perhaps you should consider taking a repayment holiday. Also, if you are looking to get a loan and want to know that you can take a short break from repayments if things are tight, then repayment holidays are probably for you. Here are some tips about how to use repayment holidays effectively and the consequences of doing so.

What is a repayment holiday?

Just as it sounds, a repayment holiday is when your lender will allow you to take a break or holiday from your monthly repayments, thereby helping you to sort out any financial difficulties that you have. A repayment holiday is often taken at the beginning of a loan, although many companies also offer the option to take a holiday at any point during the loan term.

Criteria for repayment holidays

Although not all lenders offer loan repayment Holidays, it is becoming a more common practice. If you want to take a repayment holiday at the beginning of the loan, then you can usually get a few months break before you need to start paying the amount back. However, if you want to take a break later in the loan, this usually cannot be done within the first or last six months of the loan period. Also, you need to have made a number of consecutive payments before being allowed to take a repayment holiday. The length of the break you can have varies, but usually ranges from 1 to 3 months, with not more than 3 months out of any year being taken as a holiday.

Repayment holiday advantages

The main advantage of taking a repayment holiday is that it allows you to deal with unexpected financial problems without worrying about paying off your debts straight away. This can be useful if you are between jobs or have had an unexpectedly large expenditure for one month. Instead of getting into more expensive debt on a credit card, you can take a repayment holiday and just extend the loan period.

The costs of repayment holidays

Although repayment holidays can be very useful, they do come at a price. When you take a repayment holiday, interest on the loan amount still accrues. When you start paying again, you will either have to pay the normal monthly payment for longer and pay the interest at the end, or pay a slightly higher monthly payment to deal with the extra interest you have accrued. This means you should only use repayment holidays in a real emergency. If you are struggling for more than just a month or two, you need to sort out the problem with your lender rather than take a repayment holiday. As long as you use repayment holidays sparingly and understand the costs involved, they can be a great way to keep yourself financial stable during unexpectedly tough months.

City Break Holidays Hit Hardest by Financial Downturn

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Money is tight for many of us and so extra expenses like holidays are unfortunately among the first things to get the chop in hope of saving money this year. It’s unfortunate but when you consider that the other daily expenses like food and home services like TV bills and heating there isn’t much room for compromise.

It is estimated that the number of holidays taken by British tourists will fall by a fifth this year which is a pretty steep drop for Brits who have in general been a fairly far flung bunch with all the cheap flight companies who have been able to cater to every demand for the past few years.

These companies are also finding themselves in a bit of financial trouble and many holiday and flights companies have shut down as a result, potentially leaving thousands of tourists without their holidays or worse, stranded in another country. The companies that were able to remain in Business have had to cut back on the number of flights or in some cases the destinations that they fly to as well.

The traditional holiday in the sun on a beach is still in high demand and accounts for a large percentage of British holiday destinations, the majority of cut backs are falling on the city break holidays, the number of bookings for European city breaks has fallen considerably. As well as the weekend break within the UK. It seems people are more prepared to stay at home than spend money and risk the bank holidays traffic on motorways especially since money is tight.

The cheap flight companies even have to drop certain city break destinations due to there not being sufficient demand to justify the number of flights they have offered in the past. These flights are now being replaced with either extra or new routes to holiday resort destinations that have the most demand.

The cheaper deals that many people hold out for with last minute holidays are still in high demand and so there may be an entire army of tourists holding out for late bookings to some tourist hotspots but with the financial climate you may be running a risk of there not being any cheap late deals when you want to go away.

So essentially like almost all aspects of daily life we now have to cut back and stop spending as much as we have in the past, Holidays are such big expenses for families and having more than one a year is looking more like a thing of the past for many of them. Despite the cutbacks many families are still able to afford the one or two weeks on a sunny beach which is what is most important after all!
