Ergonomics is the Science of designing equipment according to human needs to reduce fatigue, discomfort, and injury. Office Plants are for Life!

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Many businesses in the UK and abroad are now realising the potential benefits that office plants can bring and as such thousands of companies are investing in office plants as a means of improving productivity amongst employees, reduce absences caused by poor indoor climates and to help improve the general mood of employees whilst at work.

Inspired by a series of now famous academic studies that highlight how effective office plants can be in an office environment, facilities managers and business owners are transforming dull office premises into wonderful green spaces with a mixture of large and small office plants complete with stylish and colourful containers.

Unfortunately, many of these same businesses are failing to realise that live office plants require a certain amount of maintenance and care in order to flourish. Spending a great deal of money on a selection of office plants is hardly going to be worth the investment if they all die or wither within the first few days is it? There is however a much easier and some might say wiser solution to this problem by hiring office plants from a professional interior landscaping company.

Live office plants like any other living thing require a certain amount of TLC in order to grow and thrive in the harsh indoor environments frequently found in modern office and business premises. Dimly lit corridors, windowless rooms and air tight buildings are quite difficult conditions but there are plant species out there that can tolerate these climates and any reputable office plant specialist will be able to assist you with your plant options.

Carefully maintained office plants will not only make office buildings look much better but they will also improve the air quality and reduce employee stress levels thus maximising your business profits. Investing in an office plant maintenance scheme then is well worth it, especially if you and your management team have little or no time to look after office foliage.

Professional interior landscapers will provide a specialist office plant maintenance service to ensure that all your office plants are kept Healthy and are appropriate for the environment. It may also be the case that artificial plants would be more suitable for your premises in which case your plant technicians will also be able to assist you. Advances in technology have also led to a dramatic improvement in artificial plants with many varieties and life like versions now available.

Interior landscapers are experts not only in looking after Office plants but also recognising which species work well together in terms of aesthetic design. Considering that modern Business premises have become much more about getting the ‘look’ and ‘feel’ right, this can prove to be a real attribute to the way that your visiting clients view your company. With a variety of containers and office plant species to choose from it is also highly unlikely that you will not find a species that will not add something to your office.

Office plants can then, in many ways, breathe life into any office building, hotel or showroom providing they are kept healthy and happy and there is no better way to ensure that your office plants breathe easy than hiring office plants from a professional interior landscaper. And remember office plants are beautiful living things that breathe life and are not just for looking at!

Going Green In Your Office The Easy Way

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Many of us want to be responsible citizens of the Earth. We think about the effects our lifestyles have on the environment. We are concerned about global warming. We want to ensure our children’s future on this planet is one that still has clean air to breathe, an abundance of trees and wildlife, and clean water to drink. However, many of us also think that the sacrifices might be too great to “go green” in our own office. Good news. It’s not as difficult as you think.

There are 3 areas where you can make a significant impact without significant expense or inconvenience: paper, lights, and electronics.

The average American office worker throws out about 150 pounds of paper per year. Paper manufacturing contributes to the deforestation of the planet and in America is responsible for 35 million tons of CO2 a year. So what can you do? Buy recycled paper. Make full use of that paper by printing on both sides and/or using paper that is only printed on one side for scratch paper. Do your proofreading and edits on your computer before printing to reduce the number of prints you make. Re-use file folders by placing new labels over the old ones. All of these changes are easy to make but have a big impact. Pretty painless, right?

Another way you can go green in your office is as easy as changing a light bulb. In fact, it is changing a light bulb. Incandescent bulbs use 4 times more energy than is necessary to produce light. Halogen lights can get as hot as 1,100 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s hot enough to cook an egg! Alternately, Energy Star certified compact fluorescent lights (CFL’s) use 75% less energy to produce the same amount of light, last 10 times longer and produce less heat. If you feel like you need even more reason to switch to CFL’s, consider that you will also save money over the lifetime of the bulb. Once you have made the switch to energy efficient bulbs, make sure lights are turned off when they are not needed. A great way to ensure that this happens is with motion sensors that will turn the lights off when everyone has left the room.

38% of all of the carbon dioxide emissions come from the electricity we generate. That electricity is used to power all sorts of things. A major drain on our electricity is all of our office equipment such as Computers, copiers, printers, and fax machines. When going green with your Electronics, you need to look at 3 factors. You need to consider the waste that is created in the manufacturing of the products, the effects on the environment when you use the products, and the waste that is created when you are done with the products. That may seem like a lot to think about but if you follow these simple guidelines, you will be able to minimize the negative impact your office equipment has on the environment.

The manufacturing of electronics uses a lot of resources including electricity, raw materials, and water. Electronics also account for billions of pounds of municipal waste each year. Just a few of the contaminants that electronics create are toxic heavy metals, lead, PCB’s, mercury, and various acids. To lessen your office’s affect on the number of new pieces of equipment that are manufactured, as well as end up in land fills, buy all-in-one machines that combine multiple functions into one. Whenever possible, get rid of machines completely by using services such as Internet fax. With an Internet fax service you get rid of the fax machine completely, as well as reduce the amount of paper and ink that gets consumed. Another way to decrease waste is to recycle machines that are no longer working and donate those that do to charities where they will stay in use.

25% of the total electricity used by all commercial buildings in the US is consumed by Office buildings. When buying any new office equipment, look for Energy Star certified machines. This will make a huge difference in the amount of electricity that is used to run your office. For example, an Energy Star certified computer is going to be 52% more efficient than a standard one. Laptops also use a lot less energy than desktops, so consider whether this is a viable option for your office. Energy efficient machines are also going to have stand by options that will power down or go into sleep mode to conserve energy when not in use. Once the office is closing for the day, make sure that all equipment is powered off.

Taking these steps will get you on your way to going green in your office. And as I promised, they will help you make a significant impact without significant cost or inconvenience to you and your employees. And you thought going green was going to be hard.

Create a Home Office in a Small Home

Friday, December 4th, 2009

It can also be hard to find a space where you will have everything you need and also be able to work without everyone distracting you.  It is something that can be done, though.  With some key ideas and concepts you can build your home office in the smallest of homes and make it work.

Figure what you Need

You need to start planning your home office by figuring out what you need.  You may not need a huge desk with a copier, printer, fax, phone system and filing cabinet.  What you need largely depends on the work you will be doing.

You should go with the minimum that you need.  Also look for combination products that you can use, like printer and copier models that are all built into one unit.  You should also choose a desk with plenty of storage space.

You need to also consider that you will need adequate access to an electrical outlet and, depending on your internet connection, a phone line.  Make sure you can easily run what you need to and from your workspace without inconveniencing anyone.

Criteria to Consider

One of the main things you have to consider about where to put your office space is how you will work in that space.  You have to choose somewhere that will allow you to work without being bothered.

You may find that the living room is not going to work and your bedroom may be a better choice.  You have to figure in how well you will work with the factors you need to run your computer and make it work.

You have to find a space that will allow you to work or it will never be a place you can use.  That can be hard when you are limited on space, but you can do it with some careful thinking.

Making it Work

The hardest part of trying to make a work at home office in a small home is making it work.  You just have to avoid getting frustrated.  You have to make the space useable.  As you get working you will develop your own sense of organization and function that will allow you to use the office to its maximum benefit.  You will be able to make it work as long as you are dedicated.

Having limited Office space can be annoying at best, but if you are serious about working at home then you will be able to make it work.  You just have to plan carefully and be focused on making it successful.

Do not let a lack of space bring you down.  Anyone can work at home as long as they have the drive.  Your small office is nothing to be ashamed of because you took the initiative to make it work despite the odds you faced.

How to Select the Right Office Equipment for Your Office?

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Are you worried about how to choose right type of equipment for your office? Rest assured you will be getting answers and tips to help you get an answer to this question in this article. Laminators are commonly used in the office, but they are also used in homes and in great numbers too. Laminators can be used to preserve your personal documents, photos, important business documents or anything for that matter. Those businesses that are issuing in-house ID cards to their employees or representatives can see how good an investment it is.

There are currently numerous laminators available in the market with different price tags. If you are not sure which type of laminator is good for your Business then just look at some of the factors as mentioned below:

A) What are the different items will you laminate? Documents? Photos? ID’s? Menus?
B) What ml thickness you are opting for?
C) How much money can you afford?

A laminator can be used for multiple tasks. So it’s imperative that you spend some time researching and defining your projects before going out to buy the equipment, this way you will get the best return for your investment. Lamination is popular all over the world, because it provides the protection. It does enhance the appearance of the document, making color more vibrant. It also prevents smears. Laminating protects your documents, while keeping their professional look for years. Due to laminated documents you won’t have to replace them frequently, so over a long term it turns into a good investment. To be in business for long run you need to carefully watch your expenses, so that’s why laminator does make a good business sense.

Book binding serves the purpose of organizing documents and obviously keeping them together. Due to technological advancements there are many new ways to get documents bind. Using automatic binding machines, anyone can produce professional looking reports and even books from the comfort of their own homes. When it comes to businesses the presentation of reports, articles, spreadsheets & various types of resource materials all should have a professional look and feel. Binding machines bind different sheets by aligning the pages together and depending upon your binding style, you can either choose to punch your document, hold it in the form of wire or keep it with plastic folder.

There are generally three types of binding machines available – thermal, comb & wire binding. As the name suggests, the thermal binding uses heat & special adhesive material to create the booklet. Documents are placed in pre-made thermal case cover & afterwards put into binding slot, whereas binder gives thermal energy to the adhesive material up to certain temperature, allowing the glue for cooling. Afterwards the documents are ready where binding action occurs during heating only. Now the document is ready for use. Comb binding machines are an inexpensive one.

Comb bound documents have an advantage because the structure itself allows the document to ‘lay flat’ & it can be rearranged as desired. Thermal ones are electronically aligned & punched together. Lastly the wire binding machine works much like the comb binder, and is universally accepted for its common application-notebook. Binding machines make it very helpful to create your own good looking, readable documents rightly from your Office.

It’s No Crime Scene at Your Office- It’s Just Drug Follicle Hair Testing

Friday, December 4th, 2009

If your boss has asked your office to give blood, urinalysis or breathalyzer test for random drug testing, it’s no wonder that one might feel violated on top of grossed out. Since alcohol detection drug testing often involves body fluids, you may wonder if there is a better way to test employees for drugs and alcohol that is less intrusive. It’s called <a href=http://www.trimegalabs.co.uk/resources/drug-follicle-hair-testing.php>drug follicle hair testing</a>

It may seem rather strange to test one’s hair for drugs and alcohol when drugs and alcohol are ingested into the body- not coated on one’s hair, but what scientists have found is quite remarkable. Since your hair and nail cells grow from your body, it makes sense that whatever nutrients, vitamins and all the other items that are ingested into your body- in turn, make up the building blocks of your hair and nails. Unlike blood, breath and urine where one can test for drugs and alcohol from a short amount of time after ingestion, your scalp is like a diary- where a scientist can read every drug and alcohol entry. Or, just as importantly, the lack of entries.

What Is Drug Follicle Hair Testing?
The rate that alcohol leaves the body in hours and minutes makes it extremely difficult to judge how much a person has consumed and how long ago it was that the person consumed it. What else is difficult to uncover is the history someone has of alcohol abuse. With as much as an inch and a half of hair cut from the scalp of a person, a hair alcohol testing laboratory can find out what a person’s approximated consumption of alcohol has been up to a 30 day history and if the hair sample is longer, as much as a year of alcohol consumption can be tested. A series of assessments called FAEE, fatty acid ethyl esters and <a href=http://www.trimegalabs.co.uk/resources/etg-alcohol-testing.php> EtG alcohol testing </a> are done to measure the amount of FAEE and EtG markers that are revealed in the tests. The more alcohol a person has consumed, the more markers will be present on a test.

A Non-Intrusive Test
When compared to the bodily fluid demands of previous testing, hair alcohol testing is fairly non-intrusive. The samples are taken behind closed doors by a professional nurse, hired by the company who comes to your home or Business and collects the sample beneath the rest of your hair, or at least close to the scalp. It is then taken to the lab to be tested.

•    Less contamination and fraud
•    A witness can actually be there in the same room as the sample delivered
•    No appointment outside of work or school is necessary

Instead of your Office resembling a CSI episode demanding body fluids several times a year- have your employees tested once in a blue moon. With hair alcohol testing, unless your employees or students wax every inch of hair off your body and shave your head before their test, every nutrient, vitamin, drug or glass of alcohol will soon be revealed.

Keeping in mind the need of corporate world designer furniture companies have come up with swivel chairs, Italian designer chairs and conference-room-table seating chairs. While adorning executive lounge comfort and luxury are the main things to consider. Leather or microfiber chairs and sofas will fit in to this area vey well. Cheaper multipurpose chairs made of wood, metal or plastic can be set up any where whether it is the reception or workstation.

As you go inside the office, saving storage space is a necessity. Covered modular filing cabinets are there to solve the problem.
