In this article we will look at some interesting experiments and science fair projects you can easily do with eggs from the refrigerator. You will discover that the common egg has some amazing properties you might not be aware of.

The Egg Drop Science Experiment

For this experiment you will come up with a way to cushion an egg in a small container so it doesn’t break when dropped from a certain height. You can use something like a small coffee can that leaves enough room for your packaging around the egg to protect it from the fall.

You will need to do a little research to determine what might be suitable materials to keep the egg from breaking. Lots of room to experiment here for sure with different materials and arrangements of the egg in the container.

Do all your drop tests from a set height such as six to eight feet. Also drop the container on the same surface each time to keep your results consistent. As always with any science project, keep records of what you did and the results of each drop test.

The Crushing Strength Egg Science Project

One very interesting feature of eggs is their strength. That strength though is very dependent on the orientation of the egg to the force or weight that is applied to it.

So for this experiment you will determine if eggs are stronger lying flat or standing upright. You may also get an idea of how much stronger they are in one postion than the other. I think you will find this very surprising just how much a difference the position of the egg makes.

What you will need for this egg science project:
1. An empty egg carton
2. Some books
3. A couple of small trash bags
4. Some tape
5. A scale to weigh the books(optional)

Remove the top from the carton and place four eggs toward the center and in a rectangular arrangement. Leave a space between them on each row. Place a plastic bag on the table under the carton. Place the other bag over the eggs.

Now start placing books on the eggs one at a time. Make sure they are even and don’t tip over. See how many you can place before an egg breaks. Weigh all the books used if you have a scale. You now have an idea of their strength end-to-end.

Test their strength lying flat:

Place a bag on the table and make four loops of tape with the sticky side out. Place the tape on the bag in about the same arrangement as the eggs were in the carton. This is to keep the eggs from rolling around.

Place another bag over the eggs and then start placing books. How many books did it take before an egg broke. Weigh the books if you have a scale. You now know whether eggs are stronger upright or lying flat. And you have an idea how much stronger they are in that one position than the other.

Children, being curious by nature, are always fascinated by Science. In order to keep kids interested, there are several scientific methods you can expose them with.

Children wonder about lots of things. They are naturally curious. In one of the programs at the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, they see the various levels of children’s curiosity. Generally, kids want to know the answer on some questions like:

Science must not be complicated, especially for children in the elementary level. In certain activities, we need to emphasize that Science is a process. It is fairly straightforward. We can even define Science according to Richard Feynman, “a special method of discovering things as very tough but really simple”.

In fact, there are variations in the so called “Scientific Method”. Scientists do things in different ways. This includes:

In recent years, science fiction movies have made a big comeback in Hollywood and I, for one, consider that a very good thing.

I like to be surprised when I go to the movies. I like to see things that I’ve never seen before and I like to be confronted by virtual realities that I did not even think possible. That’s why Science fiction movies are my cup of tea.

They traditionally cover a wide range of subjects and themes, including several that are uniquely their own. Today’s trend in science fiction puts a premium on special effects, backed by today’s cutting-edge technology that can make even the most bizarre scenes seem realistic, such as alien life forms, spectacular battles in outer space, time Travel or traveling to other worlds at the speed of light.

Often, science fiction films are purely speculative in nature and are peppered with recurring themes involving science and technology. Other prevalent themes in sci-fi movies are mysticism, magic, the occult and the supernatural, which are also key elements of fantasy or occult/religious movies. In fact, quite a number of films blur the line between these genre, such as Forbidden Planet, Chronicles of Riddick, and the Star Wars series.

It’s hard to define precisely what makes a science fiction film because the genre has no universally accepted definition. In fact, science fiction may vary from viewer to viewer in that what is sci-fi to me may be fantasy or horror to you.

If you’ve been a long-time fan of Hollywood, then you know that science fiction has come a long way. There was a time when special effects meant putting a toy spaceship at the end of a string and waving it in front of a camera or having someone dress up as an orangutan and terrorizing an entire city. Certainly, the special effects in science fiction movies have evolved from the downright laughable to today’s breath-taking and awe-inspiring treatments that seem truly realistic. Great Rishis elucidated various behavioral depending on each circumstance and its requirement. Smritis clearly depict such differences in norms laid down. The different norms laid down by great seers during various points in world history were not because there was hatred, differences etc amongst these seers. In fact they were forced to lay down different social norms simply because the requirements during various phases of world history required specific norms for each and every phase.

An intellect that is open to accept truth shies away from prejudiced fanatical beliefs. The wheel of time is such that situations faced by us all are bound to change again and again. And it is because of this that the methods of solving various problems too change when situations change. No doubt we revere saints and seers of the past and the spiritual endeavors demarcated by them. And yet it is not necessary that these endeavors can help in today’s times since situations of those times and today differ a great deal. Hence it is most required that spiritual practices of those times that can be used today be imbibed wholeheartedly and renounce those which are not suitable for modern times (but were apt for past times).

As mentioned previously in the Middle Age of darkness and ignorance a lot of distortions plagued the spiritual arena. Such disparity was seen in the principles, methods and social execution of Spiritual Philosophy that even a common thinking intellect would refuse to trust its veracity and utility. In the dark Middle Age sacred scriptures got ‘adulterated’ so as to say. This resulted in the degradation of the lives of so called religious and spiritual “leaders”. Thus majority of world humanity rightly refused to trust them and follow in their footsteps.

There was a time many centuries back when Rishis’ speech and the sacred gospel of our scriptures were thought to be beyond doubt. Today because intellectualism and logic/proof is the in thing, scriptural precepts will not be gulped down solely on the basis of faith. The philosophy of faith can only be reinstated today on the firm foundation of its utility, proof and veracity. Today the need of the hour is that the principles and day to day execution of Spiritual Science be put forth in a form that is wholesome and acceptable to this present generation of the Computer Age. If one looks around and analyzes the life style of the highly materialistic intellectual class it certainly appears as though they are hell bent on proving Charvak right. When scientific research proves everything on the basis of proof collected from ones sense organs, mind and intellect why should not life’s philosophy be erected on the foundation stone of selfishness? The results of such erroneous thinking stares starkly in our face wherein every area of our life predominates with narrow minded selfishness, lack of magnanimity and generosity and hard heartedness. There is no other cause for this apart from our lack of faith in the importance of spiritual values and tenets. How can it be warded off? The answer is unanimous in that faith in spiritual values must be reinstated in the psyche of world humanity on a firm footing. And this is possible only by imbibing the sacred precepts of Spiritual Sciences.

Spirituality can be imbued with new vigor only by 1) destroying distortions that have entered spirituality and 2) reinstating the philosophy of aspiring for greatness which is being ignored today by those who pursue rank materialism devoid of spiritual and human values. They are: 1) Inter Faith Understanding and Equality, 2) Cosmic Consciousness and Cosmic Nature, 3) Science of True Thinking and 4) Yajna based therapy. In the subsequent phase of our research other topics too will be studied minutely.

1) Inter Faith Understanding and Equality: In order that every world religion is given utmost honor and respect 14 golden aphorisms have been elucidated that are accepted by all religions. They will encompass the religious discourses, rites/rituals and traditions of religions like Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, Parsi, Christianity, Jainism, Buddhism, Jew and Taoism. In order to make individuals and world society great and pious in character ethics, human/spiritual values, discipline and wholesome social behavior have been taken up for study purposes.

2) Cosmic Consciousness and Cosmic Nature: We are deeply studying material nature, the subtle atom, special qualities of the gigantic cosmos and the mysterious layers of human (microcosm) and cosmic (macrocosm) consciousness. Serious research is being carried out into the scientific basis of the awakening of Extrasensory Potential (ESP). In addition the question of how could one ‘contact’ cosmic consciousness and imbibe their Divine Powers is being researched into. Within this topic the various branches of Modern Science are being studied and on its basis soul scientific principles will be put forth.

3) Science of True Thinking: All those principles and theories of Psychology and Philosophy are being studied deeply that are strongly related to man’s very thinking process. The Science of Thinking includes research studies on reflection, faith, trust, sensitivity etc that designs man’s inner personality and character. A psychological study of devotion, meditation, prayer and mental focus/concentration too has been taken up by us.

4) Yajna based therapy: It encompasses the scientific application and utility of Yajna, its influence on our body and psyche and what is its philosophical basis.

We must imbibe deep faith that soul based principles stand on the firm foundation of spirituality. In addition they are omnipotent enough to ward off all attacks made by atheistic units. What can we achieve by ‘defeating’ that path which has yet to be imbibed totally and which yet has no followers or propagators? In the court of intellectualism theism tasted defeat simply because theistic propagators did not take up the challenges thrown by their modern intellectual counterparts and instead insisted on saving theism with the slogan: Have faith in God! If only they had answered logic with counter logic, precepts with counter precepts, proof with counter proof etc theism would have succeeded in defeating hard core intellectuals in their own court. But alas this was not to be and theism was relegated to an ethical downfall and psychic inertia. This is the reason why Spiritual Science over the years beat a hasty retreat to its downfall. And yet there is no need to despair because today scientific research on Spiritual Sciences will help regain eternally its lost glory.

In reality Spiritual Principles are such that the basis of human joy, peace, progress and prosperity remain on a solid footing. The problem is only one wherein the complexity of what is true and false is so enormous that it is very difficult to understand the true meaning of their precepts along with its application in day to day life. Gold is purified via a blazing fire. Similarly spiritual teachings too will be heated in such a manner so as to transform them into that form which can be understood easily by even a layman and thus will be conducive to imbibe in ones daily professional, social etc life. The probability to achieve this goal via a positive transformation of Spiritual Philosophy indeed is very high. We must have faith via the research endeavor of Brahmavarchas Research Institute that all encompassing form of Spiritual Philosophy will be presented to the world wherein there will be no room for differences and doubts. Only modern scientific research can ward off obstacles faced by theism and reinstating of spiritual values in our day to day life. Only those principles that are heated in the furnace of research and tested for sound proof and logic will prove to be true and useful both materially and spiritually. Science is the result of man!s quest to understand the nature and the world around him.  The method of scientific investigation has been perfected and applied so much to study things around us that our scientific knowledge expanding at the rate of several tens of thousands of printed pages every day. This increase in knowledge has affected all the areas of our life, so that today all the spheres of our lives come in touch with science in some way or other.

Parents prefer to send students to science courses in schools and colleges.  Synthetic Clothes have become so cheap that in most cases it is a luxury these days to wear cotton dresses.  Television, radio, medicine, and means of transportation are becoming more readily available even to the middle-class families. So the awareness is growing silently  that all the technically marvels of today are the result of scientific researches.  By implications, Science represents knowledge and truth.  In fact, these marvels of scientific breakthrough combined with the present education system are giving the impression to people that scientific investigation is the only legitimate method to learn about the realities around us.  Evolutionists and rationalists have used this popular notion to attack the Bible.

Since educated people already have this notion that scientific investigation is the only way to investigate truths around it, it is easy to influence them in the name of science.  This has been done repeatedly by all sorts of critics who demand that everything in Bible should be subjected to scientific investigation, it is not to be believed.  This claim that not everything in the Bible can be verified by scientific tests.  This realization produces a great  conflict in the hearts of young people everywhere, and therefore we should definitely discuss the whole subject.  In fact the present day Christian society is full of people who will be greatly helped if someone is willing to discuss the whole issue.

There is no shortage of people who feel that all such discussion is futile because once faith is established and once a person becomes spiritually mature, he is no longer disturbed by these questions.  There is no doubt that once a person becomes spiritually mature, many things which previously troubled him cease to do so, but this is not the real issue here.  What the spiritually mature people have to understand and appreciate is that unless someone helps these people in doubt, they might never grow to a stage where they might become mature.  The nagging doubts which they are facing presently might completely distort and destroy their faith.

A problem never looks too serious or threatening to one unless he himself is facing it.  So a person who has never faced a problem related to science versus faith will never be able to appreciate the trauma of someone who is facing it presently.  So, instead of minimizing or understanding some problems which one has never faced, or which one is not likely to face, it will be much better if all the available energy is focused on solving the problems of those who are actually facing them.

There are others who dismiss the whole problem because of their fear.  Discussing science and its relationship with the Scripture is not an easy task.  It might require the knowledge of numerous fields of study. So out of fear of falling in the tough task, many people simply run away; they just claim that this is all an unnecessary and unfruitful exercise.  But this is not the Christian spirit.  Truth can always stand before any trail, the only care to be taken is to see that the trial is fair and objective.  A spirit of genuine enquiry  should prevail instead of a spirit of reaction or of preconception.

Every reader of this article can remain assured that Christian men of learning and scholarship are not silent on the face of criticism directed against the Scriptures.  In fact there are numerous societies and organizations throughout the world who are are trying to study and refute the attacks directed against the Bible.  As a result, anyone can get  a whole library full books which examine all aspects of the problems.  Christians have nothing to loose in discussing problems related to science versus faith.  On the contrary, the whole exercise will only strengthen the faith of the genuine enquirer.

Natural calamities,God,Superstitions and Science:

There are many natural calamities like Earthquakes,Volcanoes,Tsunami,Cyclones,Super cyclones,Landslides,Thunderstorms,etc.The tsunami,which is defined as an earthquake in ocean,killed many people from different countries irrespective of geographical boundaries,religious differences,sex differences,age variations,and irrespective of many such variations.Is God angry with the children who were enjoying on the marina beach in Chennai or elsewhere on that day? but God forgives/protects even the greatest sinners, according to mythological texts.

There were many reports of earthquakes killing people from different parts of the world.Similarly a super cyclone in Orissa killed many people a few years back.

When natural calamities occur, many people blame fate/God due to ignorance.But at the same time Science could not predict Earthquakes,Tsunamis,etc.It can only explain natural calamities.For example Plate Tectonics theory says Earthquakes occur at the plate boundaries.According to this theory,the earth is divided into 7 major plates and many minor plates.These plates move at a rate of 1cm/year.These movements cause Earthquakes,Volacanoes,etc.Thus Science explains many natural calamities and some can even be pridicted by using science,for example the prediction of Cyclones,Landslides,etc.Science even advocates us the precautions to be taken.

If a student wants to succeed in an examination,he/she should work hard,i.e.,prepare the examination in a planned/scientific way instead of leaving everything to God( some students pray to God for a pass in the examination), or being superstitious by under estimating himself/herself.

Some students if they fail blame God,what is in God’s hands? when we ourselves are ignorant of how to tackle the examination.Superstition is a sign of ignorance.

when we met with an accident due to careless driving by us or by the opponent,we suddenly blame fate/god/stars,instead of analysing the situation.Medical Science cures many of injuries,diseases, than God or any other superstitions.Some scientists even opined that Astrology is a superstition.

Recently a fly over collapsed in New Delhi, and 2 people lost thier lives.Some people blamed God/fate,some blamed the government for its corrupt practices in constructing the fly over.If the government had taken all the precautions,2 lives would have saved.

In ancient days,due to fear and due to lack of awareness,people developed many superstitions including the idol worship, and many other rituals.Religion is just a matter of faith.Now a days, the people are so much westernised and also got a lot of awareness about life and methods to solve their day to day problems due to the developments in technology.The Infromation technology,Bio technology are doing wonders in the lives of people. For eg:Internet,search engines,etc are helping people to communicate fastest and also to acquire knowledge.The first man on the earth was provided with the natural resources only,not even education/awareness.Gradually the man started thinking to simplify his day to day activities.Thus by using better inputs now,we could increase the output in agriculture.Thus civilisation progressed from Stone age to the present IT age due to the efforts of man,i.e.scientific research.The developments in Science and Technology can even predict the sex of a to be born child,and thus science and technology do many wonders.We have grown to the extent of sending Chandrayaan-1,which will send us Geological and geographical information of the moon.Shortly we are also sending an unmanned mission to the moon.

In the rural areas, farmers blame God/fate whenever they face problems with agriculture.For eg:if the crops fail they blame themselves(they assume they are unfortunate),god,fate.But the reality is many farmers do not get assistance/support/guidance from the government regarding the ‘methods’ to be adopted for a better output.Some farmers are eager to get more out put and may not follow the scientific metods of agriculture.

In south India,many people follow Rahukaalam and yamagandam.If these have any significance,what is happening to the flights/trains/buses start Travelling during such inauspicious time?.
